Foreword

In addition to increasing electrification, forecasts show a rising number of gasoline engines produced worldwide. As a result of growing industrialization, 120  million new registrations are forecast for 2030. With a strong progress in hybridization, these vehicles will be equipped with at least 75% internal combustion engines, most of them will be gasoline engines. It will therefore not be possible to achieve the ambitious climate targets without a significant contribution from gasoline engines to CO2 reduction.

However, the increasingly stringent emissions legislation and the use of alternative fuels such as hydrogen are leading to new challenges in terms of irregular combustion, optimization of the combustion process, and improved ignition systems. In addition to the requirements of established markets, we must be particularly prepared for new challenges from emerging economic regions. For this reason, changed requirements must be taken into account for further optimization steps.

At the same time, however, the focus must increasingly be on the robustness of engines for worldwide use.

To achieve gasoline engine efficiencies well above 40%, engines with highly charge-diluted combustion must be developed in addition to the Miller combustion process. An important prerequisite for this are anti-knock combustion processes and high-performance ignition systems with great potential for shifting the ignition limits.

The question is: What ignition systems do we need and how do we shift the knock limit for further increase the efficiency of the gasoline engine?

Together, we want to discuss this key question and cordially invite you, on behalf of IAV and the program advisory boards, to the 5th International Conference on Ignition Systems for Gasoline and the 6th International Conference on Knocking in Gasoline Engine in Berlin.
